How Nintendo Will Be Celebrating Mario’s 35th Anniversary

This year marks the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. But Nintendo has been particularly quiet for most of this year.

Despite this being a major anniversary for their company’s defining character. Nintendo does not have any major plans in the works to celebrate Mario’s 35th anniversary. Or at least, there are no official plans announced yet.

Rumors have swirled for months as to how Nintendo would be celebrating Mario’s anniversary. With many believing a Super Mario All-Stars Collection could be their big plan. From the news gathered, All-Stars collection is in the works. But there’s no word as to when it might be released. Leaks have also revealed that Super Mario 3D World port will also be coming to the Switch. But again, there is no confirmed release date.

Normally, Nintendo Direct would announce games of this magnitude. But it’s been nearly a year since the last official, full Nintendo Direct and there doesn’t seem to be any planned for the near future. It’s safe to say COVID-19 threw a wrench into Nintendo’s plans for this year.

Still, their company’s Fall and Winter lineups look particularly barren. Which would imply they still have some games yet to be announced. There could be a Nintendo Direct in the works that fans have no knowledge of, or Nintendo could simply announce the game through Twitter, as they did with Pikmin 3’s Switch port.

Nintendo - The 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros
The 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros

Super Mario Bros

On September 13th, 1985, An Italian plumber named Mario with a propensity for jumping on mushrooms and turtle shells introduced to the world. From that day on, the platforming genre was the never the same. Since the release of the original Super Mario Bros. Mario has become one of the most recognizable characters in all of gaming and has helped turn Nintendo into the gaming juggernaut they are today. This year marks the 35th anniversary of Nintendo’s signature character and they will roll out the red carpet in celebration.

While it would be surprising if Nintendo completely overlooked Mario’s 35th Anniversary, especially after LEGO and Hasbro made it a point to celebrate, there are only so many months left in the year. If Nintendo wants to make this the year of Mario and celebrate the 35 year anniversary of Super Mario Bros. They’ll need to do something sooner rather than later.

Apple: New iPhone 12 Release Revealed

Apple admits the iPhone 12 release is running late. But it now looks like the wait will be longer than the company suggested.

This news comes from 2020’s breakout Apple insider Jon Prosser, who states the iPhone 12 launch event may be as much as a month late, with pre-orders and shipping delayed for iPhone 12 Pro models until November. If correct (and Prosser has a 100% release record this year), it would expose Apple CFO Luca Maestri’s recent comments that the new iPhones are running “a few weeks later [than usual]” as overly optimistic.

For context, Apple has announced, opened pre-orders and shipped 14 of its last 15 iPhones in September and pre-orders have historically opened a week before the phones go on sale. In no scenario does “a few weeks later” translate to shipments sometime in November. Except maybe one.

Prosser says sales of the entry-level iPhone 12 and (newly renamed) iPhone 12 Plus will begin in mid October (pre-orders week 42, shipping week 43). Consequently, Maestri may have been attempting to ease concerns by referring to only half the new range.

Interestingly, Bloomberg’s always-excellent Mark Gurman disagrees with Prosser, though he hasn’t offered any alternative dates as yet. Speaking to me, Prosser also confirmed they “are 100% what’s in the system right now”, something he states he has seen with his own eyes. So, unless this is an elaborate Apple trap to catch Prosser’s source(s), fans are in for a longer wait.

But will the iPhone 12 range be worth the wait? Perhaps. While upgraders can look forward to new display sizes, including a 5.4-inch iPhone 12 and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max, a multi-generational performance leap, impressive new styling, competitive pricing and 3D mapping camera tech on the Pro models, there are concerns. The biggest potential deal breaker is their surprisingly small batteries.  While they have cancelled high refresh rate displays and the notch looks increasingly bad in 2020.

The silver lining? At least you’ll now have more time to make up your mind.

Fortnite Maker Epic Games Sues Apple

1. Fortnite has been removed from the App Store by Apple

Apple removed Fortnite from its App Store on Thursday after Epic Games revealed that players could buy V-Bucks (Fortnite’s in-game currency) at a discount if they avoided purchasing the game through the App Store.

2. Epic Games has filed an injunction against Apple for taking Fortnite off of Apple’s App Store.

In the complaint, filed on Thursday, Epic Games alleges Apple is participating in anticompetitive practices by forcing the company to charge higher prices on App Store in-app purchases, such as for V-Bucks in Fortnite.

Fortnite

“Apple goes as far as to gag app developers, preventing them from even mentioning to users the option of buying the same content outside of the app. For example, by purchasing content directly from the app developer, or using a web browser,” the complaint reads. “Because Apple has a monopoly over the distribution of iOS apps, app developers have no choice but to assent to this anticompetitive tie. It is Apple’s way or the highway.”

3. Apple wants to work with Epic Games to resolve this issue

“Epic has had apps on the App Store for a decade, and have benefited from the App Store ecosystem. Including its tools, testing, and distribution that Apple provides to all developers. Epic agreed to the App Store terms and guidelines freely, and we’re glad they’ve built such a successful business on the App Store,” the spokesperson said. “The fact that their business interests now lead them to push for a special arrangement does not change the fact that these guidelines create a level playing field for all developers and make the store safe for all users.”

Digital Trends also reached out to Epic Games to comment on the lawsuit. We will update this story when we hear back.

It seems Epic Games was expecting Apple to remove the game from the App Store. Since aside from the lawsuit, the company also announced an event titled Nineteen Eighty-Fortnite 1 p.m. PT on Thursday. The event took place in Fortnite’s Party Royale mode and was a parody of Apple’s famous 1984 TV commercial.

Why Microsoft Wants To Buy TikTok

In recent years Microsoft has changed its business strategy from consumer-driven to businesses. However, this negotiation seems difficult. Analysts say the deal could be profitable for both companies.

President Donald Trump said that he would ban the app in the United States if he couldn’t find a buyer after 45 days. Microsoft may be the only hope for TikTok. Other Big Tech companies seem more suitable but they are facing scrutiny and hindering acquisitions.

TikTok currently values at $ 50 billion. Shortly thereafter, Microsoft’s market capitalization gained $ 80 billion, a sign that investors liked the idea.

Experts said that TikTok can achieve 200 billion USD in just a few years. The potential of TikTok can be calculated exponentially. Especially, this app is used for outbreaks in the coronavirus pandemic.

In addition, shares of parent company Snap Inc have fallen by more than 5%.
Trump said Monday he supports Microsoft acquiring TikTok, given it is a “big company, a secure company, a very American company,” though he didn’t rule out another buyer entering the fray. Trump and his administration have objected to TikTok’s wildly popular social media platform. Because of security concerns about it and Chinese parent company ByteDance.

These are the reasons Microsoft wants to buy TikTok.
